6-2, 260-pound St. Bernard standout likely to play center for Pioneers

St. Bernard senior lineman Jeff Nossek will play at Football Championship Subdivision Sacred Heart University in the fall.

Nossek, who signed a letter of intent in January, will play offensive line for the Pioneers. He was an All-Eastern Connecticut Conference and Class S All-State pick for the Saints this year.

"I've been around this league for 13 years and I coached against him before I coached him," said St. Bernard coach Sean Ladyga, who played and coached at Montville, and also coached at Ledyard and Stonington. "In my opinion, he's one of the best offensive linemen I've ever seen come out of the ECC, and I know he had his heart set on Sacred Heart, so I'm happy for him."

The 6-foot-2 inch, 260 pound Nossek played every line position in high school. Ladyga said he will probably play center in college.

"He just overpowers defensive linemen," Ladyga said. "He's focused on what he does and he excels at it."

Teammate Will Gazlay will play receiver at Division II Assumption College in Worcester, Mass.

Nossek, whose brother Ben played linebacker at Iona College before the program folded following the 2008 season, is one of four local players on the Connecticut roster for the 12th annual Governor's Cup game against Rhode Island on June 26 at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.

New London lineman Micah Bowe, Norwich Free Academy kicker Steve Calitri and Bacon Academy linebacker Corey Gallagher are also on the Connecticut roster.
